Hello.
Just sat my PM exam, and failed again - 2nd time!
I don’t understand what I am doing wrong with my revision strategy.
I have the contracts.
I have “Understanding the NEC4 ECC Contract: A practical handbook” book
I have “NEC4: The Role of the Project Manager”
I have “NEC4: A User’s Guide”
I’ve gone through them multiple times, but I am still not grasping some topics
My day to day PM is CEMAR, drafting work orders on small schemes.
How do I construct a revision plan that actually works? Do I do a deep dive on a particular topic, and then reference the books that I have about that particular topic or just read everything over and over again?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Perhaps start by analysing each main procedure as a separate exercise, including; communications, early warning, subcontracting, programme, defects, payments, etc. Although NEC have produced flow diagrams, some of these are quite ‘clunky’ so perhaps create your own, even if a hand sketched version, to understand the flow of information and actions and the procedural thread of each one.
Break down each procedure into further detail by identifying each component part, for example with Defects you have; the defined term, notification, searching for, correcting, uncorrected, accepting, the associated identified terms and the Defects Certificate.
Work through the contract as to how Defects affect other contract procedures, such as; payment under a main option A or B, definition of Completion, inclusion on a revised programme submitted for acceptance, compensation event, etc.
There are numerous links between the procedures so understand how these work and how they may be affected by the different main options. This will help to think analytically about how the contract operates as a whole and to then work through some examples of ‘what might happen if’ scenarios.
All the best with your efforts and hopefully third time lucky !!
