With regards to planning permission, what is meant by the term ‘building works’?

There are numerous possible constructions that would fit this definition. Most obviously it refers to the erection of a building, but can also refer to:

	extending a controlled service or fitting;

	altering materially an existing structure;

	work carried out as a result of Schedule 6 of the Building Regulations 2000;

	including material intended to insulate within a cavity wall;

	anything that contributes to the underpinning of a building.
