Equipment Durations

The shorter schedule of cost components states that amounts for Equipment which is in the published list are calculated by multiplying the rate (after adjustment) by the time for which the Equipment is required.
It might seem obvious but, for the avoidance of doubt, does this mean that a piece of work that takes 4 hours, the duration for the associated equipment is calculated using 4 hours?

Partly, you also need to factor in delivery time/cost to site, positioning/erection and removal afterwards. An example being the hire of an additional excavator, the Contractor might only use it for 4 hrs but they will pay a set minimum hire from the plant hire company and a delivery charge. It’s reasonable for them to charge a full day hire and delivery/removal costs if the Equipment is not on site. Section 2.24 gives the answer to this in the Short Schedule of Cost Components. For some Equipment they will need to add an operator cost (e.g. mobile crane), this should be in the CE quote too.

The word used here is “required” not “used for”, so in essence the Contractor would quote for the full day hire as that is the “required” duration for them to hire it to site.
